Management Team

NZEC is led by an experienced senior management team with a strong track record of success in oil and natural gas exploration and development. The team has individually and collectively added corporate value in a number of oil and gas ventures over the past several decades. The majority of NZEC's employees live and work in New Zealand, with an accounting and administration team, an operations team, a geotechnical team, and also a team operating the Waihapa Production Station. A small team works out of the Vancouver office, providing corporate oversight, investor relations, regulatory and financial compliance, and accounting support.

David Robinson , , , Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Robinson joined NZEC as CEO New Zealand Business in February 2014, and was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in November 2014. Mr. Robinson was CEO of the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand (“PEPANZ”) from December 2012 to May 2014. As CEO of PEPANZ, Mr. Robinson made a significant contribution to New Zealand’s oil and gas industry, managing key stakeholder relationships, representing the interests of oil and gas producers, explorers and service companies, and contributing to the development of government policies and legislation. Prior to joining PEPANZ, Mr. Robinson was Commercial General Manager for Z Energy, was a Director of Shell New Zealand, and held a number of senior downstream commercial positions with Shell both within New Zealand and overseas.

Derek Gardiner , , CA , , Chief Financial Officer

Derek joined the Company in January 2014 as Chief Financial Officer. As CFO, Derek will oversee the Company’s finance, accounting, administration and risk management activities. Derek is a New Zealand Chartered Accountant and Chartered Secretary with both a Bachelor and Master of Business Studies and more than 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry in New Zealand, Australia and Asia. He has held senior financial, business planning and accounting positions with Origin Energy NZ, Austral Pacific Energy and a number of subsidiaries of Shell. Most recently he was Commercial & Finance Manager with Origin Energy NZ. Mr. Gardiner brings significant governance, strategy, reporting and analysis experience to NZEC. He also brings strong leadership skills and experience managing joint venture arrangements.

Mike Oakes , , , General Manager Operations

Mike Oakes has worked in the oil and gas industry for 33 years in Canada, Brunei, Australia and New Zealand. Commencing his career as a field technician in New Zealand, he has advanced to hold various operational, technical, safety and management positions within exploration and production companies. Mike's vast experience and technical background has resulted in him overseeing design, commissioning and startup of four oil and gas production facilities. During his three years in Canada, Mike was involved with acquisitions and mergers, and developing strategies for development of marginal oil and gas plays. Following Canada, Mike moved to Brunei where he formed his own consultancy company working for French exploration and production company Giant Total, where he was responsible for commissioning, production and engineering for the Maharaja offshore and onshore facilities. After completing six years in Brunei, Mike returned to New Zealand to work for Origin Energy as Operations Manager and Asset Manager overseeing the development and operation of Origin's oil and gas assets and production facilities in New Zealand. As General Manager Operations for NZEC, Mike will oversee exploration and will be responsible for all producing wells and operation of the Waihapa Production Station. He is also a board member of the Petroleum Skills Association of NZ (PSANZ).
